Plan 53B is a pressurized barrier fluid support system for pressurized double-ended mechanical seals. The system pressurizes the barrier fluid using a bladder-type accumulator and establishes a stable circulation of clean, coolable barrier fluid between the two seal faces, providing continuous lubrication and removing frictional heat. Its primary objective is to maintain the barrier fluid pressure above the seal chamber pressure, thereby achieving “containment/isolation” of the process fluid. It is suitable for critical applications involving flammable, explosive, toxic, or hazardous media, or where zero emissions are required.

API PLAN 53B
- Bladder-type accumulator pressurization: Gas and barrier fluid do not come into direct contact, reducing the risk of gas dissolving into the barrier fluid, making it more suitable for high-pressure or demanding applications.
- Closed-loop barrier fluid circulation: Clean barrier fluid circulates between the inner and outer seal faces, and flow can be maintained during operation via a suction ring or circulation structure.
- Integrated cooler/heat exchanger: Enhances heat dissipation, stabilizing the barrier fluid temperature and seal face conditions.
- Pressure monitoring and alarm: Pressure fluctuates with leakage or temperature rise, enabling refill and alarm management through upper and lower pressure limits.
- Comprehensive standard interfaces: Includes connections for filling, draining, venting, pressure/temperature indication (or transmitters), facilitating maintenance.
